Each year, high school graduation rates in Georgia continue to improve. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, despite gains in graduation rates, Black and other minority students continue to have a significantly lower graduation rate than their white peers. A Georgia State Senate Education Committee Report clearly outlines the impact of high school drop-outs on the Georgia economy; specifying increases in welfare, Medicaid and prison expenses as the costs of high school dropouts. Though the report broadly expresses there are multifaceted reasons why students drop out, the overall recommendation indicates more services are needed to address each of the nuanced reasons why students decide to drop out.
